The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 19 -Lunch at Castello Banfi

Castello Banfi (the building) dates from the 1300's. It is now the focal point of the Banfi winery, which won European Winery of the Year in 2000 and was selected as the best winery in Italy three years running. Despite the fact that the latter honor was conferred by the Italian wine industry itself, there is still some resentment because the winery is owned by Americans! On the right is the entrance to the Tavern, one of two dining operations at the castello.

We had lunch in the Tavern. The ristorante is only open in the evening. Mike, Marv and I opted for the three-course tasting menu which came with three wines. The girls ordered off the menu. Nobody came away hungry!

The restroom facilities in Italy are often configured like this -- a common area with a sink and separate toilet cubicles going off it. Margene was even in one where the mens urinals were in the common area. A little disconcerting for American sensibilities! This one was big enough that I could actually get a picture.
