The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 20 - Hanging' Out in the 'Hood

Is this new construction or a restoration? Hard to tell. The main provincial road winds around right under the cliffs this place sits on, suggesting that it would have been a likely spot for a castle in medieval times. The building, however, seems to have a gray concrete-like cast to it rather than the yellow-gold of most of the local stone. Either way, it promises to be an amazing dwelling! On the right is the little local winery that I discovered while looking for the restaurant below.

This is Colle del Sole, an agriturismo restaurant. Agriturismo has to do with farm stays and is roughly like a B&B experience except a little more primative. Many of the agriturismo places also have restaurants open to the public serving typical local food at very cheap prices. (After Banfi and San Domenico, cheap sounds real attractive!) We tried to find this place the other night but missed it. I now know why and have figured out the trick. Nothing like daylight to remove all mystery. I suspect we will test it out in the next couple of days. The view stretches all the way down the valley to the town of Umbertide in the distance.

Mike Dunn does battle with the fierce baked potato in the embers. It was a silly evening ... and everybody got pretty silly!
