The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 26 - Lucca

Lucca is an interesting place, but I don't think I would want to spend a week here the way I would in San Gimignano or a few of the other hill towns we have visited. Still, it has its points. The piazza on the left was built around the site of an old Roman amphitheater. The wall around the city is still intact and ground level has been built up inside so that you can walk the perimeter of the city. Pretty cool, actually.

This tower with the tree growing out of the top is one of the better-known landmarks in the town. The shot on the right is of nothing in particular, but I thought it caught a sense of the city -- old, proud and worn around the edges. We notice that the buildings in Tuscany tend to favor stucco over the stone that is prevalent in Umbria. I am still partial to stone.

We dropped Marv Hunt at the train for Verona. He is heading to Lake Garda for a few days R&R before flying back to Spokane at the end of the week. He has been a terrific travel mate. Safe trip, Marv! On the right is the bath in our B&B in Montecatini Terme, east of Lucca. Can you find the shower? If you guessed the wood grill on the floor, you get to mop up the water!
