The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
October 2 - Volterra

When the weather allows it, everything in Italy moves outdoors. After a 90-minute road trip to get here, we took a break for cappucino and pastries. Very pretty ... very Italian ... very civilized!

We gathered for lunch on the Volterra's main piazza. There is something wonderful about dining al fresco surrounded by ancient stone buildings. Feeling so immersed in history was almost like dessert -- it provided a sweet highlight to the meal. These wireless credit card processors have been commonplace in Europe since we started coming over here. For reasons I do not understand, they have not caught on in the US ... at least not yet.

We had dinner with our camera-shy friends, Bob & Ali, at a small trattoria in Ambra, a town just down the road from La Selva. Good food, good wine, good company ... and they bought dinner! What's more could you ask for?
