The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Winter Planning Session: Montepulciano

Stormy and cold today (Duh, it's December!) Woke up to thick fog which hung around most of the day. We did get some clearing up here on the hill but we were above the fog that remained in the valley until sunset.

Margene is still recovering, trying to get re-hydrated. At least she is up and about, although still not ready to venture out into the world. The problem at the moment is that she still can't eat anything more than bananas, tea, toast and yogurt. Food with any more substance than that still sends her back into stomach cramps. That means no restaurant crawls this afternoon.

So we had a vacation from our vacation today, well before we had any actual vacation-like activities. It happens that way sometimes. I did walk into town tonight for some ribollita, a famous Tuscan soup made with bread and vegetables. There are many variations but the main ingredients always include leftover bread, cannellini beans and inexpensive vegetables such as carrot, cabbage, beans, silverbeet, cavolo nero, and onion. Its name literally means "reboiled".

I brought a classic margherita pizza (tomato, cheese and basil) back for Margene in the hope that her stomach could handle it. The experiment worked ... at least a little bit ... but one piece was enough for the girl. Maybe we'll get mobile tomorrow ... although it looks like this weather system will be with us for at least another day.

Thus is the glamorous life of the world traveler. Hope the sun is shining in your neighborhood!
