The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Winter Planning Session: Montepulciano

What do you typically do on a day that is cold, rainy and blustery? Stay home, right? Let the mail sit in the PO box for another day. Avoid having to deal with all those wet coats and umbrellas. Get some work done. Putz a bit. Curl up in a comfortable chair with a good book. Just let the world turn without you for a few hours.

If that's what you'd to at home, why should it be any different when you are away from home? Yes, this is just a long way of saying that this was a totally down day ... but we have a full week left and there's no rush. I was certainly glad we weren't doing this trip in hotels, though. Sitting around a hotel room all day can be cruel and unusual ... and camping out in the lobby (if there is one) isn't much better.

Margene's system continues to slowly heal itself but she is a long way from a dish of lasagna or tiramisu. Yes, she is getting REALLY bored with her [lack of] dietary choices ... but there are consequences of going farther afield right now. I just grazed from the stock in the fridge (a massive ham and cheese sandwich) and went down to Osteria Acquacheta for bowl of ribollita around 8pm. They close for ten days tomorrow so this was the last chance. There are other restaurants in town, of course, but they are unknown quantities, I have no real connections there yet (and they are a longer walk away).

If the weather breaks as projected tomorrow, we may get out of here early enough in the morning to make it to a street market before it is packed up and gone, usually by noon. It looks like Sinalunga is the closest Tuesday market. Finding the town won't be a problem, but finding the market could be trickier. Wish us luck.
