The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Ah Lisbon, We Hardly Knew 'Ye

The latest word from the Intensive Care Ward is that the patient is showing signs of improvement but is not yet ready to be discharged. So we spent our final day in the apartment and don't have a lot to tell you about (unless you want the details of Margene's symptoms ... and believe me, you don't!) But I will at least show you a few pictures so your visit to this site shouldn't be a total waste ...

Lisbon is known for its vintage trams that really add a touch of timelessness to the city. Our apartment is right on the Tram 23 line (along with three different bus routes), so we could easily get from here to most of the city, assuming, of course that Margene was well and felt able to step up onto various trams and busses. Yes, high steps are becoming an issue for her. I even built a small folding step to enable her to get on the airport shuttle bus at home. Life is definitely getting more challenging for the lady.

While out to pick up more medications, I detoured to a local Irish[ish] pub for a burger. Margene was sleeping, I was hungry and figured since I wouldn't have the opportunity to sample any more serious Portuguese fare, I might as well go for more familiar calorie format to hold me through the day. The burger was similar to the one I got in Cascais -- a huge beef patty, fried egg, caramelized onion, lettuce, tomato and a TON of fries. I passed on the offer of bacon. There's no way that puppy was manageable as a hand-held sandwich. I had to eat it with a knife and fork!

That's it. That's all I've got today. We'll be picked up at 5am in the morning to go to the airport for a 7:15 flight to London where we'll connect with a direct flight to Seattle. Hopefully there will be some way to make an internet connection during the layover that will allow me to upload all the trip reports that have been piling up. But between now and then I've got packing to do and a bottle of wine to finish ... although perhaps not in that order.
