The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Back in the Algarve

Scrambling to catch up on the past several days ... and finally figuring out how to get the photos from Margene's phone into my computer ... today's offering will be quick and dirty.

We left Setubal around 10am after a surprisingly nice (free!) breakfast at the hotel. The roads in Portugal are among the best in Europe ... although their autostradas are also among the most expensive in Europe. Setubal to the Algarve racked up close to a 20 euro (US$25) bill. I suspect the reason the roads are so uncrowded is because the locals use non-toll roads to avoid the cost! At the moment we are more concerned in getting from Point A to Point B quickly, so idyllic wandering through the back lanes is limited.

I should point out we visited the Algarve (Portugal's southern coast) for a few days in May 2012 and stayed in this area with members of the Affordable Travel Club, a group we have been members of since 1986 and with whom we have shared many memorable adventures over the years. It works a lot like airbnb, but for a max of $30 a night when staying with members overseas, $20 a couple per night in the US. If you like to travel and meet like-minded people, I suggest you check it out.

This time we rented a 2BR, 2BA apartment near the beach using airbnb and it looks like it will work out pretty well for us. The owner, an expat Dutchman who came to Portugal as a young man 28 years ago, is now in real estate working with a large development company.
