The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 26 - Melk

Hotel Stadt Melk and the Abbey Melk from the Abbey

This is the town of Melk on the Danube about an hour west of Vienna. On the left is our hotel with the Abbey towering above it on the cliff. The shot on the right is of the central area from the Abbey. Our hotel is the building on the front right. You can also see our proximity to the church (and its perpetually-tolling bells!) The size and pace of a town like this is really far more to our liking than the hustle of a big city. Perhaps we will find Vienna a city more to our liking. Tomorrow will tell.

Church, Melk Abbey

Speaking of the Abbey, I never saw so much gold leaf in one place in my life! Here is a shot of the main altar in the church. There are also at least six side altars in an equally impressive style. The rest of the room is in several types of marble. Life as a monk must be good!
