The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 27 - Vienna and the Neusiedler See

Schloss Schonbrunn, Vienna

The entry courtyard of Schloss Schonbrunn (Schonbrunn Palace) on a cloudy day in Vienna. Only 40 of the 2000 rooms are open to the public but the restoration has been very lovingly done. If you had money and power, you lived very well in those days. I am only surprised that the relatively poor populace put up with paying for it . . . although I guess the British still willingly foot the bill for Queen & Co.!

Neusiedler See Gasthaus Strudler, Podesdorf

Podersdorf is a quiet resort town on the Neusiedler See. We are staying in the Gasthaus Strudler, one of dozens in town and a very common lodging option in Germany and Austria. It is a moderately-priced family-run bed & breakfast operation but without much contact with the family. In this case, only one person in the place speaks even rudimentary English but we did have an adventure checking the place out and making the deal, all in our non-existent German!
