The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
June 6 - Pension Ferstl
A nice tabletop and a smile always get the day off to a better start. The standard table setup seems to be a base cloth and a smaller service cloth placed at a 45-degree angle. At the Pension Ferstl, they have added a contrasting cloth-like piece that is actually a textured paper. Rather than a generic "Reserved" sign, the small ceramic tag has our name and room number. The smiling folks are Monika Ferstl, owner of the pension and on the right, her niece Karoline, a college student who helps out a few days a week.
The interior of the Ristorante San Giorgio in St. Gilgen. The first time we ate here we were outside on the patio but rain was threatening and so tonight we were inside. The unusual feature of the place is the floor. It looks like a heavy shag carpet in the photo but it is really crushed rock like they have on the patio. I suppose the idea is to make the inside feel more like the outside. I will have to ponder the maintenance aspects . . .
