The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Cassis

Today we needed a break from ancient stone hill towns, so we headed for the Med and the town of Cassis, east of Marseille and about an hour's drive south of Ansouis. Cassis has been described as a poor man's St-Tropez -- a cute little port lined with outdoor cafes overlooking a mass of colorful fishing boats.

The beach is typically more rock than sand but there were quite a few people swimming and more who were just catching the sun. Toplessness is common, so some were catching more rays than others ... much to the delight of the dirty old men in the group!

The port is surrounded by impossibly high cliffs cut by famous fjord-like calanques along the coast to the northeast. On our way out, we took a winding road that climbed to the top of Cap Canaille, the highest of the cliffs. The views were unexpectedly breath-taking!
