The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Gulluk

The Route Out last full day in Gulluk dawned with sun and moderate temperatures, but the clouds in the distance were moving our way so who's to say what the rest of the day will hold. It didn't seem like a day for touring (particularly when we have 4-5 hours on the road tomorrow, so we took our sweet time and finally headed down the hill for lunch around 1:00.

I guess we both had some making-up to do for yesterday's lunch lapses so we headed back to Kucuk Ev, where we got the pizza a few days ago. Margene got her calamari (a full order this time) and I tried the sea bream.

As we were finishing up, four official (officious?) looking people came in and headed into the kitchen. They screamed of health inspectors which, in fact, they were. In talking with the owner, apparently they come in at the beginning and the end of the season. Interestingly, his position was that they should check the restaurants every ten days or so during the season if they expect to do any real good. Obviously this was a man who prided himself on maintaining a clean kitchen when his competitors were not so diligent. It made me glad we chose his restaurant!

Margene finally bought the scarf she had been lusting after for the past few days so she is content for the moment. Then it was back to the apartment and a pleasant evening with Lynn and Phil (our neighbors) over wine and munchies -- a brief visit that turned into nearly four hours of good conversation!

Tomorrow we head south for the next phase of the Turkish adventure, so a little pre-packing and off to bed.

Lunch at Kucuk Ev was as nice as always. The salad was colorful and fresh, the portions generous and the bream was a very pleasant fish -- firm white flesh, nice flavor and fairly easy to bone. The owner spoke quite good English and we shared a little shop talk. He bought the restaurant 17 years ago and seemed to be on top of what it takes to be successful. He was very hospitable by nature while still being aware of his restaurant as a real business. I could really like this guy.

We did one last drive-by shooting around the waterfront residences before heading back to the apartment. Our little Renault Symbol has been a very smooth ride, but we will turn it in tomorrow and pick up another car for the last half of the trip. I hope it proves to be as comfortable.
