The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 1 - The Road to Versailles

Ah, a sunny day in Vezelay. How could you resist dining in an ancient courtyard under the wysteria? It is typical -- perhaps even required -- that restaurants post their menus in front. Most put them in a glass case, but this owner made the extra effort to laminate it and present it as an open book. The menu also includes a picture of the place.

The afternoon street scene outside our hotel in Versailles. It seems like everyone in town is sitting in the sun, talking, drinking ... and smoking. Then there is Margene and Janet with Guillaume, the proprietor of a local wineshop. He had lived in the US for several years so the communication level was better than most.

When you have the itch for pizza, you have to scratch it. With my pizza subscribers in mind, we decided to check out the pizzeria next to the hotel. In addition to the expected pizzas and pastas, the menu also had a few entrees. I was so shocked that they would offer osso buco that I had to try it. Probably a mistake. Well, it was adequate but small ... and not up to the quality of their wood-fired pizzas. This one intrigued me because the menu said it had, among other things, goat cheese and salad. I couldn't imagine what salad might be, but here it is, tossed in a vinaigrette dressing.
