The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Wrapping It Up

Time flies and suddenly we were packing it up and heading for the airport again. The first leg of the homeward trek took us to Lyon, about two hours south of Nolay, where we caught a flight to Paris. In retrospect I would have probably opted to drive the three hours to Paris but I wasn't sure we would want to be up and rolling that early. The real limiting factor was when I had to return the rental car without picking up a charge for another day.

It was a dual lane road all the way to the airport, so we made it with time to spare. We have gotten into the habit of spending our last night at our departure airport. Theoretically we could have stayed one more night in Nolay and either caught an early morning flight to Paris or just driven there, but I never want to risk missing the flight home because of some snag in transit. So we always "sacrifice" a day in the interests of avoiding anxiety.

Our airport hotel was clean, roomy and well-priced, but like many properties around the airport had no restaurant. That might have been a point reduction but for the fact that the village of Roissy was literally across the road. Yes, Virginia, there is a real village at the airport.

We missed it the last time we we stayed here but now that we have "discovered" it, we will look forward to wandering through Roissy as a farewell to France. We didn't find the pizza we were originally after but were more than pleased with the meal we had in a little creperie ... all within about a five-minute walk from the hotel.

The trip home was long (about 28 hours from the time we got up until the time we went to bed at home) but relatively uneventful. You really don't want exciting plane rides! I could have done without a 7-hour layover in Chicago, though.

I will add a few closing observations to this. Check back later.
