The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
The Road to Nolay

The drive over to Nolay was foggy for much of the way but the travelling was easy (no traffic) and my new GPS made it a no-brainer. In the past we have always navigated around Europe using Michelin maps. This is workable, but having a huge map spread out in the front seat and trying to read small print is a distraction that gets in the way of simply enjoying the passing scenery.

Now the GPS does the work and both of us can relax. Margene was never that excited about being a navigator, anyway!

Our small apartment is right in the middle of the action in Nolay ... at least what little action there is in mid-winter (which is to say, not much!) We have always loved the feel of this little town, though, and see it more as an exercise in settling in to a local routine than as a sightseeing adventure.

As I have pointed out in previous trip reports, we are travelers, not tourists. The appeal of trips like this is to get a sense of what life is like in other cultures, not necessarily to come away with photos of ancient buildings. This is our second trip to Burgundy in the winter. The biting cold of our first few days is giving way to temperatures in the low 40's. Much easier to take!

My only minor complaint is that the Internet connection in the house seems to be sporadic -- nothing at all the first day and a weak signal the following morning. So if any of you are trying to reach me, just note that my response time may be longer than usual. This may also interfere with posting the daily diary on a timely basis, but it is what it is.
