The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
May 8 - Gorgeous Guilin

Another travel day. It had rained overnight and was threatening to do so again as we left the hotel in Hangzhou this morning. Fortunately it held off (barely) long enough for us to get from the transit bus, up the outside stairs and into the plane ... at which point the heaven opened. I'm glad we were in the front of the mob. The folks at the end of the line looked rather damp when they came down the aisle.

It was sunny when we got to Guilin ... but oh my, was it hot and humid! The airport had that musty smell I associate with southern Florida. I know we are as far south as we will go on this trip but I wasn't expecting temperatures (and humidity) in the 90's ... at least not in May.

We are staying at the five-star Lijiang Waterfall Hotel -- and I loved the blast of cool air when we entered the lobby! Your quiz question for today is why you think the place is called the waterfall hotel. Could it be located near a waterfall? Might there be a waterfall down through a large lobby atrium? ... or might it be something completely different? There is, in fact a reason ... that will be revealed in the photos.

One of the "must-do" items on our list in Guilin is a cruise down the Li River to see the unique terrain that Guilin is so noted for. We were thinking of going tomorrow, but the weather report is calling for rain ... lots of it. (Got to love the Internet!) Hopefully Saturday will bring more promising weather.
