The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Getting a Taste of Bordeaux

Today we make the two-and-a-half hour trip to our rental house in Sarlat ... but first, Maureen set up a private tour and tasting at Chateau du Tailhas in Pomerol, one of the better wine regions in the area ... and one of the few where she could book a tour (in English) before mid-June!

Steve Zornetzer, one of our traveling partners, is an accomplished winemaker from the San Francisco Bay Area and is always looking to pick up ideas he can use. So while he evaluates what he sees and hears from more of a technical perspective, the rest of us enjoy the ambience and just embrace the experience.

After the tour and tasting -- explained a bit more in the photos -- we headed a few miles down the road to Saint Emilion to wander and forage for lunch. We found more than we expected!

Then it was the long cross-country trip, mostly on back roads, to find our house in Sarlat. It has me wondering about the wisdom of coming all the way back here for an overnight between houses next week. Fortunately, last fall I bought a GPS unit with a European map set. With the exception of a couple of very minor glitches, it has been spot on. Sure beats trying to read a map while I am driving!

Anyway, we found the house without much problem and despite grand plans to head out to dinner, we ended up talking, drinking wine and eating bread and cheese until midnight!

Tomorrow is the big Saturday market. The weather report is saying light rain showers with gradual clearing. Not excited about that, but the prediction is also for cooler temperatures ... and that is always more comfortable for me than 80 degrees and humid!
