The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Staying Close to Home

Sarlat has a Wednesday market that is smaller than the big one on Saturdays. We had hoped it would be a little less tourist-y and more local in nature. Big mistake! The tour busses still poured out small mobs who clotted together and moved through the market like a pig through a python. (Don't ask me where THAT picture came from!)

Apparently all the smaller size did was cram the same number of market-goers into a much smaller space so that moving became four-inch shuffles with a few lateral moves to get around the larger clumps. We decided we already had enough food at the house, bought another five liters of wine to re-stock and escaped the mob.

Great plans were discussed and ultimately abandoned. The afternoon evolved into the read-a-little/nap-a-little routine that is so necessary yet too often overlooked in the quest to see it all while we are here.

Truth is, we could live here permanently and never see it all ... and was that really the purpose of the trip anyway? I like to think the purpose was to spend an enjoyable few weeks in Dordogne and with that definition, a day relaxing by the pool was right on point.

We did venture back to town in early evening for a stroll, a beer in an outdoor cafe on the main square and some serious people-watching. Margene and I opted to eat lightly -- a crepe and a glass of wine. The others wandered off for more substantial fare but we all wound up back at the house for a night cap ... happy.

Mission accomplished.
