The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Moving Day

This morning we packed everything up and headed for Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, about an hour and a half east of here. There are LOTS of sights to see in that area ... far more than we will be able to cram into our limited time as we have to be back in Beynac (about 6 miles down the road from Sarlat) at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. C'est la vie!

This gave us a chance to see a few places that might have been a little too far for a day trip. It worked!

First stop: a local market in Souillac to stock up for the afternoon picnic. Apparently Souillac isn't much of a tourist area as we heard no English being spoken in the crowd. That made the market a little more "real" somehow.

Then it was on to Martel, the self-described "Town of Seven Towers." We didn't see seven towers that looked much different from what we had seen in other towns but I suppose the Tourism Board needed a hook!

Lunch was a picnic on the banks of the Dordogne (or at least a small triburary thereof). Still it was pleasant to be outdoors by the water.

Then we went up the hill to the town of Carennac, also on the banks of a river. How you can go uphill from a river and find another quiet river has me a little confused, but maybe somewhere there is a spectacular waterfall that we missed! By now it was getting hot and while it was a pleasant little town, most of it will remember it most for a cold beer on a shady patio.

We pressed on the last few miles to Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. Our hotel -- Le Manoir de Beaulieu -- was very pleasant and relatively inexpensive. They also had working WiFi (yay!) so I could finally get online at a speed that allowed me to get some work done! We wandered around town a bit and didn't see anything all that special other than a small creperie tucked behind the church. It was tempting, but there were more interesting restaurants down by the river.

We ended up at a restaurant called Le Flots Bleu (the blue waves), part of a hotel. We didn't see any waves, blue or otherwise, on the river but we did find a very pleasant meal and some good conversation. The only scary part was that I thought the maitre'd/owner looked disturbingly like Glen Beck. I heard he was looking for a new job, but ...
