The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
December 2 - A Rainy Day in Burgundy

Oh sure. Now that I have my windshield scraper, wouldn't you know that the weather has warmed up some! Well that's 36 cents right down the drain!

Today dawned in the upper 30's/lower 40's -- warmer ... and raining. Actually, this is more the weather we were expecting although I always prefer to see sun, no matter what the temperature.

I spent most of the morning composing deathless prose for one of my weekly e-letters but we had no particular plan for the day anyway. We took a quick loop to the northeast, passed through a few undistinguished villages and decided to make lunch at the house.

For purposes of quality control, we really had to open one of the cans of fois gras, just to be sure that we were bringing back something of quality ... and, oh my! Back to Auchan while the sale is still on!

Then we just lazed around the house for the rest of the day. (Hey, there has to be some down time, even on the best trips!) We really like this house, but there isn't anything happening in Tanlay and not that much going on in the immediate area, so the idea of camping out here for a couple of weeks in the spring is not looking like a great idea. Oh well, better to figure that out now rather than after renting the joint for two weeks!

We finally saddled up to find a spot for dinner. After doing a drive-by of the several restaurants in Tonnere, none of them struck us as much more than a place to eat. The menus in the full-fledged restaurants were expensive and frankly, did not excite us. We finally ended up back at the Auchan brasserie. Margene had another pizza and I went for the salmon. Both were decent and decently priced.

On the way back to the house, we did discover that Tanlay's only restaurant was open tonight, so perhaps we will see if we can catch them for dinner tomorrow night.
