The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
February 13 - Around Rothenburg

The day was overcast, but it made the town all the more of a time warp.

The architecture of the place is unlike anything we have seen elsewhere in Europe. This ancient well is no longer in use but speaks of centuries of survival.

This gate was just around the corner from our B&B. You can see the stairway leading up to the walk along the top of the wall. The walk has slits where archers could fire on attackers. Walking the wall, you can really start to appreciate the predatory nature of life in the middle ages.

A view through the wall down to the Tauber valley. The church boasts a hand-carved altar piece that is truly impressive.

The center of town is on the market plaza, fronted by the town hall.
