The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
May 19 - Surprising Athens

The back streets around Monastiraki Square were jammed! The tavernas basically took over the streets (although they shared the space with roaming hawkers, most African, selling everything from bootleg CDs to flowers). Hint: sit at a table next to the building and they are less likely to bother you! Still, there was a great energy in the crowd, even on a cloudy Saturday afternoon.

Just raise your view slightly from the square and the wonder of ancient Greece is right in front of you. Don and Sharon finally got in about 8:00 (only three hours late) in time to join us in the bar on the roof of the hotel to watch the lights come on at the Acropolis. Very impressive.
