The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 22 - Montone
Marv, Margene and I took it easy today -- slept in, packed the Dunn contingent off to Florence and rolled out in time for lunch! The destination of choice was Montone, perhaps 20 kilometers north of where we are staying. Montone turned out to be a very personal-size kind of hill town -- very small, very clean and very nice. For a change, the restaurant we found did not even start serving lunch until 1:00 (about the time that most places close) so we found a corner table in the sun and nursed a bottle of Montefalco Rosso, one of the local wines.
The next important events were grocery shopping (the cheese and bread were running low) and a stop at the little local winery to pick up half a case of their $3.50 vino rosso. Hey, we spare no expense in this outfit! Back to the house, take a nap, break out the munchies as the sun starts to set ... perfect!
The Florence crew was still not back by dinnertime (we didn't expect they would be) so we went off in search of dinner. The agriturismo was not open so we found another local trattoria and had a very adequate ... and very inexpensive ... dinner of typical Umbrian cuisine. That was about all the day involved, and just about all we wanted.
