The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
A Monumental Morning

It looked like the sun might make an appearance this morning so we headed west to Glenfidden, the site where Bonnie Prince Charlie landed and officially announced his candidacy for King of England. The British system didn't work that way, of course. Succession was mostly determined by which side could kill more of the other side.

As you already know from the story of Culloden (you DID read about that, right?), Charlie never made it to the big time nor, it appears to me, did he deserve to. There is a monument at Glenfidden to all those Highlanders who died in what became the winner in the "Most Futile Attempt of 1745" contest.

Of course, early promises aside, it rained off and on all day anyway. Tearing ourselves away from history, we headed back to the hotel but made a quick detour just north of town to check out the Old Interlochy Castle, now a ruins. I was amazed at how small it was ... but you gotta love the location!

What is nicer on a rainy day than to sit inside, snug and dry, with a good book? (OK, I can think of a few other possibilities but let's keep this clean for the kids!) We were just ready for a little down time ... and I had several days worth of trip reports to catch up on.

The hotel's award-winning restaurant re-opened tonight so we decided to eat here and avoid venturing out into the weather at all. A good choice as it turns out, although the restaurant was short-staffed and struggling to break in a new head chef. Been there. Done that.

Oh, and we decided our best bet itinerary-wise was just to arrive at the Edinburgh Airport Hilton a day earlier than originally planned. We can still turn in the car on schedule and have all day Saturday to check out some of what we missed in Edinburgh when we first arrived.
