The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
May 1 - Yes, Virginia, There Is a Gorge

Today we finally see the gorges ... or at least two of the three. We get part of the third as we approach the dam, but that happens at night! First, though, we have a couple of shore excursions (I suspect to prolong the trip enough that the schedules work out evenly!)

The first stop is Baidecheng and the White King Villate, an old temple at the entrance to the Qutang Gorge. In the afternoon, we stopped in Badong for a sampan trip up a series of side gorges. I will tell those stories in the enclosed photos.

The final adventure of the day -- with the exception of the Captain's Farewell Party (we were all sorry to learn that he was leaving!) -- was our passage down the ship ladder at the Three Gorges Dam -- the project that is causing all the upheaval upriver. We will see more of the dam tomorrow.
