The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur Down Under
November 3 - Belgrave, Victoria

On to Leg 3 of the trip. We arrived in Melbourne in the early afternoon. The place was almost deserted as this is the day of the running of the Melbourne Cup horse race. The entire country shuts down for an hour or so for the race, but in Melbourne itself, the entire day is a holiday!

We rented a car and dashed out of the city into the nearby Dandenong National Park about an hour outside of the city. We ended up in a historic cottage that was part of an experimental botanical station around the turn of the century. (Photos included.) Since we were on the road most of the day, out restaurant experiences were limited to a very acceptable dinner at a local tavern. We will probably head back into Melbourne tomorrow, but for today this is a delightful change of pace!
