The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 28 - Santa Margherita

Just a short jump up the coast from the Cinque Terre and we are at the start of the Italian Riviera. We are in the town of Santa Margherita, just north of Portofino and still in the reasonably-priced zone. Our B&B, the Villa Gnocchi, sits up one of the many hills and is tucked into the trees. The view from our balcony is terrific and the room is pleasant.

We are definitely is wind-down mode. We got here about noon, went down into town for lunch and wandered around for an hour or so, then came back up and took a nap! Maybe tomorrow we will get more ambitious ... but why? Owner Roberto Gnocchi is also the chef so we opted for dinner here. It was simple but quite adequate and we didn't have to negotiate the hills after dark. Also at dinner with us was a British couple who live in Scotland and a couple from Denmark. After dinner we sat around the living room talking with the Brits and two couples from Australia who are here for a week.
